FAQS

What are your sessions like?

I like to keep my sessions fun and interactive.  I love getting “look at the camera” photos, but my favorite ones are when everyone is laughing or interacting with each other.  I am great with little kids and have lots of patience.

What time of day will my outdoor session be?

The best time of day to photograph you is sunrise or late afternoon and evening (when the sun is not directly above our heads). Start times vary and depend on the time of year. I will definitely work with you to pick a time that is convenient for you

What should we wear to our family session?
  • Avoid “matchy-matchy" - Photos look really stunning when there is nice coordination without overly matching.I typically suggest dressing no more than two people up in the same print or color. Think coordinate instead of match perfectly. This helps to balance out your photos.

  • Avoid neon, bright white, or super dark colors- Super bright or super dark colors can be difficult to photograph and can also mess with the hue of your skin tone and overall feel of the photos. If you’re a fan of white, like winter white, try for creamy or ivory hues instead of something super stark.

  • When in doubt, neutral colors- I’m convinced you can never go wrong with good ole neutral colors. That will make for clean and beautiful photos every time. Pastels and earthy tones also qualify as wonderful neutrals.

What happens if the weather is bad for an outdoor session?

Living in Wisconsin, weather is unpredictable and constantly changing.  Rain is the main reason for any cancelled sessions.  Most of the time I am not able to make the decision to cancel until the day of, sometimes hours before (if we can wait to decide).  If there is a chance of rain, I will reach out to my client days before and will start coming up with a game plan.  In rare cases of extreme heat, excessive wind, and super cold temps, I may cancel & try to reschedule also.

When is the best time to have a lifestyle newborn session & what else should I know about these sessions?

The best time to book in for a newborn session is during the first 6-12 days – but because lifestyle sessions do not depend on the little one sleeping through, we can schedule a session for anytime in the first 3 months after baby is born. Sessions almost always take place in the morning, (around 10am) as babies tend to be more settled in the morning and start losing the plot come afternoon – if your baby is the exception to that rule, don’t worry, we can do a different time! I like to allow 1.5 hours for newborn sessions so we have time for changes/feeding/settling.

When I arrive at your home, I’ll have a quick walk through your house to find the rooms with the best natural light – we’ll generally use 2-3 rooms; often the master bedroom, living room and nursery – but this really is dependent on where the light is. Natural light through a window is key for lifestyle home sessions.

Please don’t feel like you need to spend days cleaning and preparing your home – it is helpful if you can do a bit of de-cluttering in the rooms mentioned as we don’t want anything too distracting in the images. Your house doesn’t need to look like a show home!! (I get it what reality looks like, I have three kids myself ... )

**Important to note:  I do not pose newborn babies.  Lifestyle shoots are intended to look natural and candid.  I enjoy shooting in a style that emphasizes the newborn snuggled up with mom and dad, curled up with siblings, and laying comfortably.
